Let me start by saying that Firefly is fucking awesome. And because it is so awesome, this is going to suck ASS.

Not that space MMO's are bad or anything. I'm REALLY looking forward to Star Trek Online. But let's compare the two. Star Trek has a huge universe, an established system of government and politics, etc. Firefly has...well, pirates in the sky, pretty much. Sure, it could be good, but there just isn't enough to work with.
In any case, this is sacrilege. Rivers is the expert, though. What say ye?

Well there is great potential to be good game out of this. I did shit a brick and cried tears of joy when I found out the news. Then I thought about it.
Now there is an established for of government. It isn't expanded in the series or movie cause Whedon didn't get to. But in official books and interviews, he has expanded on it. Also he has in interviews talked about the other planets and what their culture is like etc. So Joss Whedon know, and that is the key to making it good. They need to involve Joss Whedon.
Problem. I haven't done my homework on who has the rights, but I have a feeling Fox might have something to do with. Joss has vowed never to work for them again. They currently own Firefly in Television. This is why we aren't going to see a new show any time soon.
So, um, if Whedon is involved, then it will be good. If not, well... I'll be crying while I'm playing it.
